Soft, golden, and beautifully swirled with a rich walnut filling, Hungarian Walnut Beigli (Diós Bejgli) is one of Hungary’s most cherished traditional pastries. Its distinctive rolled shape reveals layers of tender pastry wrapped around a sweet, fragrant walnut filling, making every slice both beautiful and satisfying.
Traditionally associated with Christmas and other special occasions, beigli is more than a dessert—it is part of Hungary’s holiday baking tradition and a pastry often prepared for family gatherings.
What Is Hungarian Beigli?
Beigli is a traditional Hungarian rolled pastry filled most commonly with walnuts or poppy seeds. The walnut version is called Diós Bejgli, while the poppy-seed version is known as Mákos Bejgli.
The pastry is rolled into a log before baking, creating the characteristic spiral pattern visible when it is sliced.
A beautifully baked beigli has a tender, slightly rich crust and a generous filling that is moist, nutty, and sweet without overwhelming the pastry.
