Hungarian Kifli – Walnut-Filled Crescent Cookies

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, powdered sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the softened butter, egg yolk, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Wrap the dough and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  4. For the filling, combine the ground walnuts, sugar, egg white, vanilla, lemon zest, and apricot jam until thick and well combined.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Roll the dough out thinly and cut into small triangles or wedges.
  7. Place a small amount of walnut filling along the wide end of each piece.
  8. Roll each piece from the wide end toward the tip and gently curve it into a crescent.
  9. Arrange the kifli on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 15–18 minutes, until lightly golden around the edges.
  11. While still warm, carefully roll the kifli in powdered sugar mixed with vanilla sugar.
  12. Allow them to cool completely and dust with additional powdered sugar before serving.
