PART 2 — The Secret My Husband Never Knew

I remembered sitting alone in that hospital room, sweating and shaking while my husband chose a birthday dinner over the birth of our child.

I remembered his words.

Handle it yourself.

Stop being so dramatic.

I remembered his mother’s voice in the background.

Women have been giving birth for thousands of years.

And then I remembered his message.

Mom loved the watch I bought her. Coming home Monday. Don’t start another fight.

“No, Luca,” I said quietly. “What’s not fair is leaving your wife alone while she’s in labor and then expecting her to be waiting at home when you decide to return.”

He took a step toward me.

“I didn’t know it would happen that night.”

“You knew I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant.”

“I thought you were having false contractions.”

“You heard me say my water broke.”

He had no answer.

Dad finally looked at him.

“Sit down.”

Luca froze.

It wasn’t a request.

He slowly lowered himself into the chair opposite us.

Dad’s expression remained calm.

“You abandoned my daughter during childbirth.”

Luca’s eyes dropped.

“I made a mistake.”

“No,” Dad replied. “A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. A mistake is missing a flight. You made a decision.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Dad reached into the briefcase beside him and removed a folder.

Luca’s eyes immediately followed it.

“What is that?”

I answered before my father could.

“My work.”

Luca looked at me.

“What work?”

I placed another folder on the coffee table.

“You’ve spent two years telling everyone I’m just an accountant who works too much.”

“I never said—”

“You did.”

I opened the folder.

“And you were wrong.”

His eyes moved across the documents.

For the first time since he’d entered the house, he looked genuinely frightened.

I watched him turn the pages.

Bank transfers.

Company accounts.

Invoices.

Payments.

And transactions I had quietly documented for months.

Luca’s voice became barely audible.

“Where did you get these?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“I’m a forensic accountant, remember?”

His face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

“I’ve been reviewing our finances.”

“Why?”

“Because some of the money leaving our joint accounts didn’t make sense.”

He stopped breathing for a moment.

Dad remained completely silent.

I continued.

“And then I discovered something else.”

Luca stood abruptly.

“You’ve been investigating me?”

“No.”

I closed the folder.

“I’ve been investigating the numbers.”

His hands began to shake.

“Jessi…”

I looked toward the hallway where the nursery waited.

“Our son deserves a father who shows up.”

Then I looked back at him.

“And I deserve a husband who doesn’t leave me alone in a hospital because his mother wanted him at a birthday dinner.”

Luca stared at me.

“What do you want me to do?”

I picked up my phone.

“Nothing.”

He frowned.

“Nothing?”

“No.”

I smiled sadly.

“For the first time in our marriage, Luca, I’m not going to tell you what to do.”

His eyes moved toward my father.

Then toward the folder.

Then back to me.

And that’s when his phone began ringing.

The name on the screen was Wendy.

Luca looked at it.

I looked at it too.

Neither of us moved.

Then Dad quietly said:

“Answer it.”

Luca hesitated.

Finally, he pressed the green button.

“Mom?”

Wendy’s voice immediately filled the room.

“Luca, where are you? I need you to come over right now. There’s something you need to know about Jessi and her father.”

Luca’s face went pale.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Dad slowly leaned back in his chair.

Because apparently, my mother-in-law had been keeping a secret too.
