Soft potato dough wrapped around juicy plums, boiled until tender, and coated in golden buttery breadcrumbs and cinnamon sugar—Hungarian Plum Dumplings (Szilvás Gombóc) are one of Hungary’s most beloved traditional comfort foods.
Simple ingredients become something truly special in this old-fashioned recipe. When you cut into one of the warm dumplings, the cooked plum releases its sweet, fragrant juices into the tender potato dough, while the toasted breadcrumbs add a delicious contrast.
What Are Hungarian Plum Dumplings?
Szilvás Gombóc literally means “plum dumplings” in Hungarian.
The dumplings are traditionally made with a potato-based dough. Fresh plums are wrapped inside the dough, then the dumplings are gently boiled until cooked through.
After boiling, they are rolled in buttered toasted breadcrumbs mixed with sugar and cinnamon.
The result is a wonderful combination of soft, chewy, fruity, buttery, and slightly crisp textures.
